Baby, It’s Cold Outside

Ah, February.  Historically the harshest winter month in my neck of the woods.  Although we’ve had a remarkably mild winter, we got a few inches of snow last night and I am plunged into winter full-force.

Winter is not my favorite.  It’s cold.  Everything outside is dead and brown.  It’s dark when I leave in the morning and dark when I get home at night.  We have to wear thick and bulky (read: uncomfortable) clothes.  My heating bill skyrockets and my skin dries out.  Give me a warm and green spring day anytime.  However, I am trying to be more thankful in my life and I refuse to succumb to the winter blahs.  So I’ve compiled this list of good things that winter can bring us.

  • Fresh citrus fruits, most especially grapefruit
  • The sun reflecting off freshly fallen snow
  • Hot cocoa
  • Homemade soup simmering on the stove
  • Baking cookies while it’s snowing
  • A snuggly blanket for a lazy Sunday afternoon nap
  • Watching big, fat snowflakes fall to the ground
  • Wearing boots

I wish I had a longer list, but cut me some slack.  I’m just trying to see my proverbial glass as half full.  I still don’t love winter.  But even the gray and bitterly cold days have something to give us, if we can see past all the cold, dead rotten-ness of the thing.  Today I have baked cookies, made hot cocoa ,watched the sunlight dance on the snow and I have a big bowl of grapefruits on my counter.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a pot of soup to put on to simmer.  Happy Winter!

I can totally sypathize with you. Winter is cold and brown and it makes your nose run and your lungs fill like they are full of ice when you breathe in AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! (hehehehe) I cannot help it. I am a mountain girl at heart and the most wonderful memories that I have in my life happened at winter time. We got alot of snow up there! Don’t get me wrong i love summer, but because I couldn’t get water in my ears I couldn’t swim with my friends and was always left behind to watch. In the winter I found myself. Snowball fights, sleigh riding, snow ice cream, and frosty making was right up my alley! Nothing held me back in the snow. Then when you come inside, half frozen to death, a warm fire and a hot cup of cocoa was always waiting after an afternoon of fun in the snow. When I had my daughter the tradition continued, along with a whole crew of nieces and nephews. We use to take big black garbage bags to sleigh on when there weren’t enough sleighs to go around. Big fun all around. And…yeah, being a teacher…well, love those snow days! (hehehehe)

Maybe I could get behind it a little more if we ever got snowball-fight snow…alas, I will continue to wait for the green shoots of spring. 🙂 Thanks for reading and sharing your love of the worst season of the year…hehe.
